Trigeminal Neuralgia

What is Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sensation in the face. It is characterized by severe, sudden, and stabbing pain that can occur anywhere along the distribution of the nerve, which includes the forehead, cheeks, and jaw. The pain is often triggered by everyday activities, such as talking, eating, or brushing teeth.

Symptoms

  • Severe Facial Pain: Sudden, intense pain on one side of the face, often described as a sharp, electric shock-like sensation. The pain typically lasts for a few seconds to a minute.
  • Pain Triggers: The pain can be triggered by mild stimuli like touching the face, chewing, speaking, or even a light breeze.
  • Pain Episodes: The attacks can occur in clusters, lasting for days, weeks, or even months, with periods of remission in between.
  • Pain Location: The pain may be focused in one of three branches of the trigeminal nerve: the ophthalmic (forehead), maxillary (cheek), or mandibular (jaw) branches.
  • Unilateral Pain: TN typically affects only one side of the face, although it can occasionally affect both sides in rare cases.

When to see a doctor

If you experience sudden, severe facial pain or recurrent bouts of sharp, stabbing pain on one side of the face, it is important to see a doctor, particularly if the pain is triggered by common activities like chewing or talking. These could be signs of trigeminal neuralgia, and early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment. A doctor will evaluate your symptoms, review your medical history, and may recommend imaging tests (such as MRI) to rule out other potential causes of the pain, like tumors or multiple sclerosis. If left untreated, trigeminal neuralgia can become progressively more painful and debilitating. Treatment options, including medications or surgical procedures, are available to help manage the condition and reduce pain.
