Dementia
What is Dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of cognitive impairments that affect memory, thinking, and behavior. It is not a specific disease but rather a group of symptoms caused by various underlying conditions. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, but other conditions like vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and Lewy body dementia also fall under this category.
Symptoms
- Memory Loss: Frequently forgetting important dates, events, or repeating questions.
- Difficulty with Problem-Solving or Planning: Struggling to follow a familiar recipe, manage finances, or work through tasks that require concentration.
- Disorientation: Getting lost in familiar places, confusion about time, or forgetting where they are.
- Language Problems: Trouble finding the right words, difficulty following or joining conversations, or repeating stories.
- Poor Judgment: Making decisions that are out of character, such as giving away large sums of money or wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather.
- Mood Changes: Increased anxiety, depression, or irritability, particularly when there are changes in routine or environment.
- Withdrawal from Social Activities: Losing interest in hobbies or socializing, and withdrawing from family and friends.
When to see a doctor
If you or someone you know begins experiencing memory loss, confusion, or significant changes in behavior, it’s important to see a doctor. Early symptoms of dementia can be subtle, but if they worsen or start interfering with daily activities, a professional evaluation is needed. Conditions like Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia often progress over time, and early diagnosis allows for early intervention, which can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. It’s also important to seek medical attention if symptoms appear suddenly or drastically worsen, as this could indicate another medical issue that may be treatable, such as a stroke or vitamin deficiency. A doctor can perform tests, review medical history, and potentially use imaging studies to determine the cause of cognitive decline.
