Vascular Malformations of the Brain

What is Malformations of the brain?

Malformations of the brain refer to congenital abnormalities in the brain’s structure that occur during fetal development. These malformations can vary widely in severity, from mild to life-threatening, and may affect various parts of the brain.

Common Types of Brain Malformations
  1. Chiari malformations: Brain tissue extends into the spinal canal.
  2. Holoprosencephaly: The brain fails to divide properly into two hemispheres.
  3. Lissencephaly: The brain surface appears smooth due to incomplete neuronal migration.
  4. Hydranencephaly: A condition where parts of the brain are replaced by cerebrospinal fluid.
  5. Dandy-Walker malformation: Involves the cerebellum and fluid-filled spaces around it.
  6. Craniosynostosis: Premature fusion of skull bones that affects brain growth.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on the type and severity of the malformation but may include:

  • Neurological issues: Seizures, developmental delays, intellectual disability.
  • Physical symptoms: Abnormal head size (too large or too small), facial deformities, or skull shape abnormalities.
  • Movement and coordination issues: Problems with walking, fine motor skills, or balance.
  • Hydrocephalus: Excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, causing pressure.
  • Behavioral symptoms: Delayed speech or cognitive difficulties.
  • Feeding and breathing difficulties in severe cases, especially in newborns.
  • Vision or hearing problems in some cases.

When to see a doctor

You should see a doctor if you or your child experience any developmental delays, such as not meeting milestones like crawling, walking, or speaking, or if there are noticeable changes in head size or shape, such as rapid growth or asymmetry. Other concerning signs include seizures, unexplained behavioral changes, movement issues like problems with balance or coordination, or symptoms of hydrocephalus, such as persistent vomiting, irritability, or downward deviation of the eyes. Breathing difficulties or feeding challenges in newborns and infants are also red flags. Prompt medical attention is crucial to diagnose and manage brain malformations effectively.
