Functional Neuro Surgery

What is Functional Neuro Surgery?

Functional Neurosurgery refers to a subset of neurosurgical procedures that aim to treat neurological conditions by altering brain function rather than removing tumors or treating structural problems. The goal is to manage disorders that impact the brain’s ability to function properly, often by targeting specific brain regions or pathways.

Common Conditions Treated by Functional Neurosurgery:

  1. Parkinson’s Disease: A neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement, causing tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia (slowness of movement).
  2. Essential Tremor: A disorder causing uncontrollable shaking, especially in the hands, head, or voice.
  3. Epilepsy: A condition characterized by recurrent, uncontrolled seizures.
  4. Chronic Pain: Some types of pain, such as intractable pain from injury or conditions like fibromyalgia, may be treated surgically.
  5. Dystonia: A movement disorder causing muscle contractions that result in abnormal postures or twisting movements.
  6. Obesity: Some surgeries are considered to control severe obesity through interventions that target brain areas involved in hunger and satiety.

Symptoms

  • Movement Disorders: Tremors, rigidity, stiffness, or difficulty moving.
  • Seizures: Uncontrolled shaking, loss of consciousness, or convulsions.
  • Chronic Pain: Pain that persists despite conventional treatments.
  • Muscle Spasms or Involuntary Movements: Twitching, jerking, or abnormal postures.
  • Cognitive or Mood Changes: Significant memory issues, mood swings, or cognitive impairment linked to conditions like Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy.
  • Inability to Perform Daily Activities: When symptoms significantly impair your ability to carry out everyday tasks despite medications or other treatments.

When to see a doctor

  • Persistent or worsening symptoms: If you have symptoms like tremors, muscle stiffness, or seizures that are not responding well to medication or lifestyle changes.
  • Progressive decline: When symptoms, like difficulty walking or talking, progressively worsen over time.
  • Severe side effects from medications: If the side effects of medications become too severe or intolerable, especially when they no longer control the symptoms effectively.
  • Impact on quality of life: If symptoms begin to interfere significantly with your ability to live independently, work, or enjoy activities.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms like these, it’s crucial to consult with a neurologist or neurosurgeon to discuss the potential for functional neurosurgery or other treatment options. They can help assess the best course of action based on individual conditions and needs.
